What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, "Purple Star Astrology") is one of the two great systems of Chinese destiny analysis — alongside BaZi (the Four Pillars) it is the most widely practised form of Chinese astrology — with a recorded history reaching back to the Song dynasty and a traditional origin attributed to the Taoist master Chen Tuan (c. 871–989). While BaZi reads the balance of Five Elements at your birth moment, Zi Wei Dou Shu paints a map: it places over 60 stars across 12 Life Palaces, each palace governing a domain of life — personality, siblings, marriage, children, wealth, health, travel, friends, career, property, fortune and parents. The system's classical canon is the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (紫微斗数全书, Complete Book of Purple Star Astrology), compiled in the late Ming dynasty (around the late 16th century), which remains the reference text for star brightness grades and the Four Transformations used by this calculator.
At the center of the chart sits the Purple Star (Zi Wei), the emperor whose position determines the placement of all other major stars — the Quan Shu likens Zi Wei to the emperor at the pivot of the heavens, with each surrounding star cast as a court official. Your chart also includes the Four Transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji) which show where fortune, power, reputation and friction concentrate, and the Decade Luck (Da Xian) cycles that describe the theme of each ten-year chapter of your life.
The 12 Life Palaces
| Palace | Chinese | Governs |
|---|---|---|
| Life Palace | 命宫 | Your core personality, talents, and overall life trajectory |
| Siblings | 兄弟宫 | Relationships with brothers, sisters, and peers |
| Spouse | 夫妻宫 | Marriage, romantic patterns, and partnership quality |
| Children | 子女宫 | Children, students, and creative output |
| Wealth | 财帛宫 | Income patterns, money management, financial fortune |
| Health | 疾厄宫 | Physical constitution and health tendencies |
| Travel | 迁移宫 | Travel, relocation, and fortunes away from home |
| Friends | 交友宫 | Friendships, networks, and subordinates |
| Career | 官禄宫 | Profession, achievement, and social standing |
| Property | 田宅宫 | Real estate, home environment, and family assets |
| Fortune | 福德宫 | Inner peace, enjoyment, and spiritual life |
| Parents | 父母宫 | Parents, elders, and support from authority |
Each palace is read together with its triad — the two palaces at four-position angles and the palace directly opposite — forming the "three-direction-and-center" analysis that gives Zi Wei Dou Shu its layered depth.
The 14 Major Stars
Each star shines with different brightness (Miao, Wang, De, Li, Ping, Bu, Xian — from temple-bright to fallen) depending on which palace it occupies — the same star expresses very differently in different houses. The brightness scale and the courtly archetypes above follow the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu's star annexes (諸星問答論, "Inquiries and Answers on the Stars"), the chapter that later schools — Zhong Zhou, Zi Yun, modern Taiwanese lineages — all annotate from. For an independent overview of the system's history and structure, see the Wikipedia article on Zi Wei Dou Shu.
Why Do Zi Wei Dou Shu Calculators Give Different Charts?
The same birth data can produce genuinely different Zi Wei charts across tools — usually because of seven calculation decisions that schools resolve differently, and that most calculators never disclose:
| Decision | What It Can Change |
|---|---|
| Year boundary — Lunar New Year vs. Li Chun as the year switch | Year Stem/Branch, and every palace derived from it |
| Lunar conversion & leap months — how a leap-month birth maps to the lunar month count | Month-based palaces and their stars |
| Late Zi hour — whether a 23:00–24:00 birth belongs to today or tomorrow | Day-based palace placement and the Hour Palace |
| Palace placement sequence — starting palace and clockwise/counterclockwise derivation (Yin/Zhong Zhou schools differ) | Which palace every star lands in — the whole chart layout |
| Four Transformations — which stem triggers Ke, Quan, Lu, Ji | Which stars are transformed, and how palaces are interpreted |
| Star brightness tables — temple-to-fallen scales per palace | How strongly each star expresses |
| School conventions — Zhong Zhou, Zi Yun, Taiwanese lineages | Interpretation of the same correctly-computed chart |
The 12Zodiacs convention: every rule above is documented in the full Zi Wei methodology — year boundary, leap-month handling, late-Zi rule, palace sequence, and the Four Transformations table — and the engine is locked by 835,082 automated assertions across 5 verification suites (a 10,940-chart golden corpus, classical anchor charts, mathematical invariants, and 50 public cases that run live in your browser). When two calculators disagree, ask each one to show its convention table; a tool that publishes its rules and its test results can be checked, one that doesn't cannot.
Zi Wei Dou Shu vs. BaZi — Which Should You Use?
The two systems are complementary, not competing — they look at the same birth moment through different lenses. BaZi reads the elemental weather of your birth time; Zi Wei Dou Shu maps stars into twelve life palaces and tells you which domain of life each energy lands in. Traditional masters often cross-validate both.
| Dimension | BaZi (Four Pillars) | Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star) |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | 4 pillars, 8 characters | 12 palaces, 66 stars |
| Main symbols | Five Elements, Ten Gods | 14 major stars + Four Transformations |
| Best at | Element balance, luck-cycle timing, "why" questions | Palace-by-palace portraits, "which life area" questions |
| Birth-hour sensitivity | Moderate (3 pillars still work without the hour) | High (the hour sets your Life Palace) |
| Reading style | Abstract, climate-like | Concrete, domain-mapped |
A practical rule: for "when are my strong years?" start with BaZi decade cycles; for "what does my chart say about marriage vs. career?" read Zi Wei Dou Shu palaces. For the fullest picture, cast both — you can generate your free BaZi chart here and compare readings side by side.
How Accurate Is This Calculator?
The engine is validated against 10,940 randomly-generated test cases plus targeted boundary cases (leap-month births, late-Zi-hour births, Chinese New Year boundaries) with a 100% match rate against the reference implementation, and cross-checked against classical texts including the Quan Shu brightness tables and the ten-stem Four Transformation sequence (十干四化). Leap months use the mainstream mid-month rule; daylight saving time in 1986–1991 China is auto-corrected. All computation happens locally in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology)?
Zi Wei Dou Shu is one of the two major systems of Chinese fate calculation, alongside BaZi (Four Pillars). It maps over 60 stars onto 12 Life Palaces covering career, wealth, marriage, health and more. The Purple Star (Zi Wei) is the emperor of the chart. It is known for giving concrete, palace-by-palace insight into different life domains.
How is Zi Wei Dou Shu different from BaZi?
BaZi analyzes the balance of Five Elements in your birth moment using four pillars of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Zi Wei Dou Shu instead places stars into 12 palaces representing life areas. Many practitioners use both: BaZi for element strength and timing, Zi Wei for domain-specific detail. You can try our free BaZi calculator too.
Is this Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator free?
Yes, 100% free with no sign-up and no paywall. You get the complete chart: all 12 palaces, 14 major stars with brightness, 50+ minor and auxiliary stars, Four Transformations, Life/Body Masters, and the full Decade Luck timeline.
How accurate is this Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator?
The calculation engine is validated against a version-locked open-source benchmark (iztro 2.6.0): 835,000+ assertions across a 10,940-chart golden corpus, 10 classical anchor charts (leap-month, late-Zi and Lunar-New-Year boundary cases), and mathematical invariants that must hold for every possible chart. Every deployment is blocked if a single assertion fails. You don't have to take our word for it — the full validation report is public, and 50 test cases run live in your browser on the engine validation page. The full methodology documents every convention this calculator follows.
Why do Zi Wei Dou Shu calculators give different charts for the same birth data?
Seven school-level decisions explain most differences: the year boundary (Lunar New Year vs. Li Chun), lunar leap-month mapping, late-Zi-hour day assignment, palace placement sequence, the Four Transformations table, star brightness scales, and the interpretive conventions of each lineage. The 12Zodiacs engine documents every convention in its methodology and locks them with 835,082 automated assertions across 5 verification suites, including 50 test cases that run live in your browser, so any chart it produces can be independently checked. See the full comparison table above.
How was this Zi Wei calculator tested?
Beyond routine charts, the engine was stress-tested on the edge cases that silently break other tools: births in a lunar leap month (mid-month rule), late-Zi-hour births at 23:00–24:00, and birthdays in the Lichun–Lunar-New-Year window where the Zi Wei and BaZi year pillars disagree. The engine is locked by an automated regression suite of 835,082 assertions across 5 suites — a 10,940-chart golden corpus cross-checked against iztro 2.6.0, classical anchor charts, mathematical invariants (the Four Laws), and 50 public cases verified live in your browser. A single failed assertion blocks every deployment. See the live validation report → · Read the full methodology →
How do I read my Zi Wei Dou Shu chart?
Start with three anchors. First, your Life Palace and its major star — this is your core temperament. Second, the Four Transformations: Lu (opportunity), Quan (power), Ke (grace) and Ji (friction) show where fortune and friction concentrate. Third, check the career, wealth and spouse palaces for the domains you care about most. This calculator renders each palace with brightness levels and triad links so you can read it layer by layer.
What does the Life Palace mean?
The Life Palace (Ming Gong) is the throne of your chart — it describes your personality, talents and overall life direction. Its major star defines your archetype, and its opposite palace (Travel) colors how you meet the outside world.
What does the Spouse Palace reveal?
The Spouse Palace (Fu Qi Gong) describes your pattern in intimate partnership: the style of relationship you attract, how you behave inside one, and the qualities a partner likely brings. It reads patterns, not a named person.
What do the 14 major stars mean?
The 14 major stars are the lead actors of the chart — from Zi Wei (the Emperor, authority) to Po Jun (the Pioneer, breakthrough). Each carries a gift and a shadow; the palace it lands in decides which life domain that energy plays out in. See the star table above for all fourteen.
What are the Four Transformations (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji)?
Derived from your birth year stem, the Four Transformations supercharge four stars: Lu opens opportunity, Quan grants drive and authority, Ke brings grace and reputation, Ji marks friction that demands attention. Which palace each transformed star sits in tells you where that energy lives.
What is Decade Luck (Da Xian) in Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Da Xian is the ten-year luck cycle: every decade, a different palace becomes "active" and its stars color that chapter of life. Your 30s might run a wealth-palace decade while your 40s shift to a career-palace one. This calculator marks each palace with its decade range and highlights your current active decade.
What does Zi Wei (the Purple Star) in the Life Palace mean?
The Emperor in your Life Palace marks a natural leader archetype: dignity, composure, and the instinct to take charge. The growth edge is delegation and staying open to counsel — empires fail when the emperor stops listening.
What does an empty palace mean in Zi Wei Dou Shu?
An empty palace (no major star) is not a gap — it borrows the stars of its opposite palace, read at lower intensity. This calculator labels borrowed readings explicitly so you know the difference. An empty palace often means that life domain runs on flexibility rather than fixed star energy.
How is Purple Star Astrology different from Western astrology?
Western astrology tracks planetary positions in zodiac signs and houses; Zi Wei Dou Shu places a fixed set of virtual stars into twelve palaces derived from your lunar birth data. The two share almost no machinery — different stars, different math, different timing systems (Da Xian decades vs. planetary transits).
Can Zi Wei Dou Shu predict the future?
It maps tendencies, not fixed events. Think of the chart as a weather report for your life domains — which seasons favor action, which demand patience, where friction likely builds. Traditional masters use it for timing guidance and self-understanding; treat readings as reflection, not certainty.
Which is more accurate, Zi Wei Dou Shu or BaZi?
Neither is "more accurate" — they answer different questions. BaZi explains the elemental why behind patterns; Zi Wei Dou Shu maps what plays out in which life domain. Practitioners who use both say the cross-check is stronger than either alone. Our free BaZi calculator makes that comparison easy.
How does this calculator handle lunar leap months?
We follow the widely-adopted mid-month rule: days 1–15 of a leap month are treated as the regular month, while day 16 onward count as the following month. This is the default used by mainstream software. Alternative schools exist; our rule is stated openly so you can cross-check with any practitioner.
How is the late Zi hour (23:00–24:00) handled?
Births between 23:00 and midnight belong to the Late Zi hour. Consistent with mainstream practice, the hour is counted as Zi (Rat) hour while certain day-based stars use the following day. The displayed lunar date always shows your actual calendar day.
What about China daylight saving time (1986–1991)?
Births in mainland China between April and September of 1986–1991 were recorded in daylight saving time. This calculator automatically subtracts one hour for those dates so your chart uses standard Beijing time. A notice appears when this correction is applied.
Why does my Zi Wei year pillar differ from my BaZi year pillar?
If you were born between Lichun (Start of Spring, around February 4) and the Lunar New Year day, the two systems show different year pillars — and both are correct. Zi Wei Dou Shu follows the lunar calendar: the year pillar, year stem and Four Transformations switch on Lunar New Year day, the mainstream convention of the Quan Shu tradition. BaZi follows the solar calendar: its year pillar switches at the exact moment of Lichun. A birthday in that window therefore reads as different years in each system — this calculator follows each system's own classical rule.
Can I use this without knowing my birth time?
You can, but the hour determines your Life Palace position. Tick "I don't know my birth time" for a solar-noon approximation, or try the traditional technique of chart verification: calculate with two or three candidate hours and see which chart's description fits your life better.
Does the chart change over time?
Your natal chart is fixed at birth. What changes is the Decade Luck (ten-year cycles) and yearly/ monthly / daily horoscope layers layered on top of it — use the Decade/Year/Month/Today tabs above your chart to see which palace is currently active.
Is my birth data private?
Your birth date and time are processed entirely in your browser and never sent to our servers. The chart you see is computed locally. No account, no tracking of birth data, nothing stored.
Is the AI reading button sending my data to an AI?
No — it copies a structured text summary of all 12 palaces and stars to your clipboard. You choose where to paste it: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any AI assistant. The format is designed so AI models can read it accurately. Nothing leaves your browser without your action.
