Chinese Zodiac Calendar and Tung Shing

The Chinese calendar is the underlying date system behind two related traditions: the Chinese zodiac (each lunar year carries an animal sign — 2026 is the Horse year, switching at Chinese New Year) and the Tung Shing (Chinese almanac), which adds auspicious-day selection on top of the calendar. Explore our zodiac horoscopes and the Chinese Almanac to go deeper.

How the Chinese Calendar Is Calculated

Months begin at each astronomical new moon; a 13th leap month keeps the lunar year aligned with the sun via the 24 solar terms (computed from JPL DE440s solar longitude, minute precision); years are counted in the 60-year Gan-Zhi cycle. Our engine computes every value for 1900-2100 from first principles — no table lookups. Full calculation methodology →

What is the Chinese Calendar?

A lunisolar system

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon — each begins at new moon, a synodic month of about 29.53 days — while the year follows the sun, a tropical year of about 365.24 days. A leap month, inserted when a month contains no major solar term, keeps the two in step: roughly seven leap months every nineteen years. Chinese New Year "drifts" across late January to mid February because the new moon that opens the year falls on a different Gregorian date each cycle — in 2026 it lands on February 17, 2026.

Two millennia of refinement

The 60-day sexagenary cycle already appears on Shang-dynasty oracle bones (c. 14th century BCE). The Taichu calendar (104 BCE) codified the no-major-term leap rule still in use. The Shoushi calendar (1280, Guo Shoujing) fixed the tropical year at 365.2425 days — the very value adopted by today's Gregorian calendar. The Shixian calendar (1645) brought in Western astronomical tables and the "fixed-qi" method that places each solar term by solar longitude. Today the Purple Mountain Observatory publishes the official almanac.

How the dates are computed

Three quantities drive every date on this page: the new moon (month boundaries), the sun's ecliptic longitude (24 solar terms at 15° intervals, to the minute), and the 60-cycle sexagenary count (day pillars). All three are computed here from JPL DE440s ephemerides, then the almanac layer runs the four-tier arbitration of the 1739 Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu. Most online calendars round solar-term boundaries to the day — which flips the month pillar near every boundary; this one does not. Full methodology →

Chinese Calendar FAQ

What is a Chinese almanac calendar?
A month-grid view of the Tung Shing: each day shows its lunar date, day pillar, governing Day Officer, and a color tier — green for auspicious-cluster days, muted for taboo days. Our calendar page adds filters (best days only, weekends only, clash-animal filtering) that make the 2,000-year-old format genuinely usable for modern planning.
How do I find auspicious days in the lunar calendar?
Traditionally you asked an elder with the red book. The modern path: our calendar grid marks the auspicious clusters automatically (Officer + Belt + veto arbitration, computed not guessed), and the per-activity pages (wedding, moving, contracts…) go deeper with full reasoning per date. Filter by your birth-year animal to personalize.
What are the luckiest days in the Chinese calendar for 2026?
Luck is activity-matched, so our engine answers per activity: the 2026 wedding, moving, opening, travel, and contract lists each rank their own best dates from the same astronomical core. The calendar month view shows the overlay — days where several activities' favorable windows coincide are the visually greenest.
Is the Chinese calendar lunar or solar?
Both — it is lunisolar: months follow the moon, but the year is anchored to the sun through the 24 solar terms (节气), which is why Chinese New Year drifts. Our engine computes those term boundaries from JPL's DE440s ephemeris at minute precision, validated against the Purple Mountain Observatory — the detail that keeps Day Officers correct at month boundaries.
Why do some days have a star and others a warning?
Stars mark auspicious-cluster days — Yellow Belt deity path plus a premier Day Officer (Full, Stable, Complete, Open, Establish) and no Tier-1 veto. Warnings mark taboo days: breakers, Four Departures, or Yang Gong dates. Everything in between is neutral — perfectly usable for ordinary life, just not for major ceremonies.
How does the Chinese calendar work?
It is lunisolar: months begin at each astronomical new moon (so dates shift against the Gregorian calendar), while a 13th leap month approximately every 2-3 years keeps the year aligned with the sun via the 24 solar terms. Days also carry Gan-Zhi pillars (60-day cycle) used by the almanac for auspicious-day selection. Our engine computes all of this from JPL DE440s astronomy for 1900-2100 - no table lookups. Full calculation methodology →
What is today in the Chinese calendar?
Check the tear-off card at the top of this page - it shows today's lunar date, day pillar, officer, Yi/Ji lists and lucky hours, recomputed fresh on every visit. For any other date 1900-2100, use the converter above.
What is the difference between the Chinese calendar and the Gregorian calendar?
The Gregorian calendar is purely solar (365/366 days, fixed months). The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow moon phases (29 or 30 days), the year is kept in sync with the seasons through solar terms and leap months, and years are counted in 60-year Gan-Zhi cycles rather than a continuous count. That is why Chinese New Year falls on a different Gregorian date each year.
Is there a Chinese lunar calendar calculator?
Yes - the converter on this page converts any Gregorian date from 1900 to 2100 into its lunar date, day pillar, Nayin element and Day Officer instantly, and links to the full almanac page for that day. It is also available as a free JSON API.
What is my Chinese year animal?
Match your birth year in the zodiac year table above — but check the boundary: if you were born in January or early February, your animal belongs to the previous year (the year switches at Chinese New Year; precision astrology uses Lichun instead).
Which Chinese zodiac is luckiest in 2026?
Luck in the almanac tradition is activity-matched, not a fixed ranking. The six-harmony (六合), three-harmony (三合) and clash (冲) signs shift with each year branch — see the live zodiac scores in the "Your zodiac today" panel above for the exact standing this Horse year.
What is 2026 in the Chinese calendar?
2026 is the Bing Wu (丙午) Horse year. It spans 2026-02-17 (Chinese New Year) to 2027-02-05. The full month-by-month calendar is on this page.
How to predict baby gender with Chinese calendar?
We don't offer gender prediction — the " imperial chart" is a Qing-dynasty folk table, not part of the calendar system itself. This site is an astronomical calendar engine: every date, term and pillar is computed and verified to minute precision. What we can tell you precisely: which days are auspicious for a healthy birth — see our Auspicious C-Section Dates guide, engine-picked per month.
