Auspicious Renovation & Groundbreaking Dates in 2026 — Chinese Almanac

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an auspicious day to start work in Chinese New Year 2026?

The post-New-Year "start work" (开工) date is chosen from Establish and Open days after the February 17, 2026 lunar new year, avoiding the Year Breaker (Rat days in this Horse year). Our engine computes the specific 2026 windows — the same logic serves both businesses resuming operations and renovation crews swinging the first hammer.

What are some auspicious move-in dates for 2026?

After renovation completes, the move-in (入宅) selection shifts to Open, Stable, and Establish officers — different ranking than the groundbreaking itself. Our engine treats renovation-start and move-in as separate activities with separate filters; the 2026 move-in list appears on our moving-house year page.

Which day is good to change house shifting?

Shifting day selection follows the moving (入宅) rules: Open, Stable, or Establish Day Officer, Yellow Belt hours preferred for the actual first entry, no Break or Danger officers, and no clash with the family head's birth-year animal. Our moving-house page lists every qualifying date with the clash column visible — filter for your animal and the list personalizes itself.

Why is groundbreaking date selection different from other activities?

Renovation and groundbreaking uniquely invoke the Earth Sovereign taboo (土王用事) — periods when disturbing the earth is classically avoided — plus the tradition of the groundbreaking rite (动土祭) that asks permission from earth deities before the first dig. Our engine's Tier-3 scope rules apply both filters only to this activity, which is why renovation lists look shorter than moving lists for the same period.

What happens if I must renovate on a non-auspicious day?

Tradition offers remediation rather than prohibition: begin inside a Yellow Belt hour (each date's hourly chart shows the windows), keep a red envelope above the doorframe of rooms under work as notice to household spirits, and stop work at sunset on the first day. If the date is a hard Tier-1 veto day, classical practice reschedules even the symbolic first swing.

Do I need a different auspicious date for painting vs demolition?

Yes — the tradition distinguishes 动土 (groundbreaking/structural) from smaller works. Demolition leans toward Remove (除) days that clear the old; painting and finishing prefer Complete (成) and Stable (定) days that consolidate. Our renovation dates target the structural start; the finishing trades have latitude within the same renovation window.

Why do two Chinese almanac websites show different lucky dates?

Because an auspicious date is an arbitration verdict, not a fact recorded in one master book. Five decisions separate the lists: whether the calendar is transcribed from a printed edition or computed astronomically, how the 12 Day Officers reset at solar terms (calendar-day switching versus minute-level), which hard vetoes are enforced (Year Breaker, Month Breaker, Four Departures, Yang Gong taboos), whether Black Belt days are promoted as lucky, and which edition the site follows. The 12Zodiacs engine computes the calendar from the JPL DE440s ephemeris, switches terms at the exact minute, enforces every imperial veto, and follows the Qing imperial canon — all documented in the public methodology page.
