What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu?

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, "Purple Star Astrology") is one of the two great systems of Chinese destiny analysis — alongside BaZi (the Four Pillars) it is the most widely practised form of Chinese astrology — with a recorded history reaching back to the Song dynasty and a traditional origin attributed to the Taoist master Chen Tuan (c. 871–989). Why does my Zi Wei year pillar differ from my BaZi year pillar?

If you were born between Lichun (Start of Spring, around February 4) and the Lunar New Year day, the two systems show different year pillars — and both are correct. Zi Wei Dou Shu follows the lunar calendar: the year pillar, year stem and Four Transformations switch on Lunar New Year day, the mainstream convention of the Quan Shu tradition. BaZi follows the solar calendar: its year pillar switches at the exact moment of Lichun. A birthday in that window therefore reads as different years in each system — this calculator follows each system's own classical rule.
